Kayla Silber

Los Angeles, CA

The intensely complex process of creating Kayla’s body of work led her to explore big themes that transformed her on a fundamental level. Self-worth. Sexuality. Divinity. Nature. Spirit. Consciousness. Compassion. Empathy. Love. You’ll see all these themes on display in the mixed media pieces shown in the Tristan lobby.

From thousands of photographs that she has taken all over the world, Kayla constructed mixed media pieces with the goal of rehumanizing the viewer and reminding them of who they are at their core. Kayla believes that only when we open our eyes and our hearts to allow the denigrated and suppressed feminine to take its rightful place as the equal and necessary counterpoint to the masculine can we cleanse the toxicity from the system and create balance.

Kayla attended the Baltimore School of the Arts, studying drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in fine art from the University of Maryland in 2002. A 10-month walkabout in Australia nurtured her love for photography and adventure, and she returned to Los Angeles, where she currently resides and works as a creative director.

Shannon Weber

Cottage Grove, Oregon

Shannon came into the world closely attuned to nature and collecting lost and forgotten objects. From an early age, she spent as much time in the outdoors as she could, riding her bike or playing along the river near her home. From her vast collection of materials from nature, Oregon’s coastal beaches, and odd reclaimed objects, Shannon creates fiber mixed media pieces that reflect her love for nature, four of which are on display at The Tristan.

Shannon loves stitching, weaving, and laying things together like beach plastics, fish bones, beach stones, and reclaimed metal and wire, layering them into complex odes to nature. Her noted designs are the boats, caged works, and totems that reflect much of her life living on water, both rivers and the Pacific Ocean, in remote places in Oregon.

A self-taught, award-winning interdisciplinary artist, Shannon’s work is often the subject of lectures by known curators of Fine Craft and Fiber. She has been invited to exhibit her work in Japan, Australia, and South Korea. Shannon exhibits and teaches nationally and internationally while living and maintaining her studio in Cottage Grove with her husband, John, and their mutt, Mr. Loki.

AJ Waters

Portland, OR

AJ creates mandalas, a form of art used by ancient people to represent the whole universe. These symbols date back to prehistoric days and were used in the spiritual aspect of Buddhism and Hinduism. They are often featured in paintings, wood block prints, and even tattoos. His biggest project to date, AJ intricately carved 25 mandalas over three weeks to display throughout the hallways and lobby at the Tristan.

AJ finds one of the most difficult mediums for this art form includes the hands-on process of layered wood carving, but he has become adept at taking a vision and turning it into reality. For him, the process of creating each individual mandala is one of inspired revelation, elemental surprise, and pure bliss. His desire with each piece he creates is to always breathe positivity into the world. Experience his one-of-a-kind creations throughout The Tristan and draw inspiration and encouragement.

AJ is an Oregon resident and self-taught artist. He enjoys creating and exploring different methods and mediums that allow his creative process and vision to evolve into unexpected delights.
